Once dialing 2 and letting go of the
dial, it spins to the normal position. This action causes
the the dial to open and closes the line loop twice causing the
first selector switch in your central office to make two
vertical steps. It then hunts across the level to an idle
trunk to a digit-absorbing service code selector switch.
This particular office originally
had 5-digit dialing, i.e., an office code of "3" and then the
four-digit number. At this point, you have dialed "2." To prepare for Operator Toll Dialing and a universal
seven-digit system, the "2" and then the next digit were added later.
