Once dialing 3 and letting go of the
dial, it spins to the normal position. This action causes
the the dial to open and closes the line loop three times
causing the second selector switch in your central office to make
three vertical steps and hunts across the level to an idle trunk
to a digit-absorbing service code selector switch.
This particular office originally
had 5-digit dialing, i.e., an office code of "3" and then the
four-digit number. At this point, you have dialed "2" and
"3." To prepare for Operator Toll Dialing and a universal
seven-digit system, the "2" and the "3" were added later.
